The coin was minted by the Roman emperor Marcus Junius Brutus in 43-42 BC.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Brutus. The inscription means:
BRVT: Brutus
IMP: Imperor
L PLAET CEST: Lucius Plaetorius Cestianus (producer of the coin)
On the reverse of the coin are images of two daggers with a freedom cap between them, a symbol of ancient freedom. The inscription EID MAR (Eidibus Martiis) means “Ides of March”. Here, a reference is made to the 15th of March, when Brutus assassinated Caesar. Message is clear: Brutus freed Rome that day.
